Plateau in Tourism Performance

As predicted by industry leaders, tourism performance data is showing a leveling off of the very significant growth that we witnessed in 2018. The numbers are still strong, and we expect that the rest of the year will follow this growth plateau pattern.

A Cold, Wet January Didn’t Slow Tourism

Hotels, restaurants, ferries and airport reported strong results compared to 2018 despite poor weather conditions. We are looking forward to those cherry blossoms – spring is on the way!

Victoria finished the year with continued exceptional performance in the hotel sector in December as we saw ongoing Christmas business from our short haul markets. Year end results show very strong growth in every category

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the accommodations sector in Victoria continues to show very strong results with occupancy increasing 9.34% over November of 2017 and 2.65% year-to-date. Room rate, and, as a result, RevPAR also increased significantly over 2017.

With a year-to-date hotel occupancy rate of 78.3%, we are sure to see some hotel developers take notice of Victoria! In the past 10 years, Victoria has lost 17 hotels and over 1,100 rooms to condo or social housing development.

92.62% occupancy for Victoria is the highest average monthly rate for the City that we have ever seen. Some factors affecting performance for August include the impact of the forest fires and smoke in the interior of BC diverting travel to the island as well as great weather
Millions More in July Room Revenue

Despite some softening of ferry and cruise ship passenger traffic, Victoria’s accommodation sector experienced an almost 3.7% increase in July occupancy compared to last year and a $28 increase in RevPAR.
