A Strong May — Trend of What is to Come…
A strong May could be an indication of what is to come for June, July, and August for Vancouver Island hotels. Weather conditions were poor but many hoteliers reverted to a strategy of deep discounting to achieve higher occupancy rates.
- 2011 Portrait of American Traveler by Ypartnership reports that 13% of American leisure travelers stayed at a B&B or inn at least once during the previous year. Furthermore, 79% of leisure travelers express interest in staying at B&B in the future.
- According to the 2010 Canadian Tourism Sector Compensation Study, BC has the highest national average for wages and salaries in the industry. Overall, significant increase in wages took place in the industry between 2005 and 2008; however, since then, most positions received no or very small increases. The study also found that the national average voluntary turnover rate in the industry was 26.1%, comparing to 9.1% for all private sector businesses.
