Bright Results for June
Hotels performed very well in June with occupancy up 2.58% from 2010. Some discounting took place between hotels as the average room rate dropped $5.03 from 2010.
- The affects of recession are still felt throughout US and Canada. In US, the economical growth slowed in both quarters of 2011 (0.4% in Q1 and 1.3% in Q2), while spending was flat in Q2. In Canada, consumer spending remained sluggish, while the economic output fell by 0.3% in May 2011.
- According to Stats Canada, in June, trips to Canada by non-residents increased by 0.3%, while the number of returning Canadians increased by 14.5% over June 2010. There was no change in travel from US, and 16.1% increase in returns of Canadians from US in June 2011 compared to June 2010.
- Thirty two million Chinese traveled abroad in the first half of 2011 and spent $28 billion representing an increase by 17% over the last year.
- In June, Air Canada reported a system load factor of 84.2%, versus 84.7% in June 2010, a decrease of 0.5 percentage points. WestJet reported a load factor of 75.7% with traffic increase of 5.8% year over year, and capacity up 9.2% over the same period.
