Victoria Struggles in January
2012 was off to a rough start for Victoria’s tourism sector with all indicators showing a drop compared to January of last year. Due to a decline in both occupancy and average room rates, RevPAR was a rather dismal $38.
- According to TIAC, Canada slipped to 18th in the world in international arrivals in 2011 falling behind Thailand, Saudi Arabia and Greece. Canada was the only country in the top 25 to have experienced a drop in international arrivals last year (-0.8%).
- The total number of international visitors who came to B.C. in January 2012 was up by 2.3% compared to January of last year. While U.S. visitation continues to drop, visitation from other countries increased – with the number of European visitors up 13%.
- The 2nd annual Ryder Hesjedal’s Tour de Victoria was announced in January and will take place in June. Last year, the event attracted 1,500 people.
