Poor Weather Slows Spring Results
A very cold, windy and rainy spring has put a damper on April tourism performance in this region. Hotels, Ferries and Airport stats are down sharply from 2010 as a result of weather conditions and poor economic results in the US.
- Commercial foodservice sales in Canada slowed to 3.1% growth in the first quarter of 2011 following a 5.2% increase in the fourth quarter of 2010. British Columbia, where the sales decreased by 5.8%, was mostly the cause of the weak start, with the effect of hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics and the impact of the HST.
- The number of trips by Canadians to the US rose 4.2% to 4.3 million in April, the highest monthly figure since Marcy 1995. At the same time, the number of visits by American residents to Canada increased 0.6% to 1.6 million.
